Less is more

Less is more "We have enough for our needs but not for our greed" said Mahatma Gandhi and yet the hunter-gatherer within us rationalizes that our need to collect is always a need for securing the future and never our greed.  This survival instinct is so deep-rooted in our genes that call for us to gather and hoard things in anticipation of a catastrophe- a famine, a flood. So here we go shopping and gather things that we may already have and may not even need. Then comes the problem of storing and sorting this clutter that we have created. We often go through our clothes in cupboards and trunks, kitchen shelves and cabinets, attics and garages and we have that Christopher Colombus moment of discovery on finding something ‘new’ least remembering that this was that ‘must- have’ thing we got from one of those big sales and kept it preserved for ‘the rainy day’.  For those born in the 60s and 70s, life was not always this way. Shopping was not a daily affair but was restricted on...

Journey from left to right

Journey from the left to right The left brain and the right brain a demarcation I learnt in psychology at college, till then we as individuals  were of two category either brainy or brainless. In college when  we did the first  test to check which part of our  brain is dominant with in,, I was overjoyed that it was a overdominant left.  It is said  that left brained people are good at logic reasoning and mathematics. Now I knew I was so well fitted for this education system and hence fit for the world as a whole. I had the key to success right in the left hemisphere The thought however haunted me that, if the  left brain is indeed what we need then why the hell was a right one created in the first place?  Further in collge we  dealt with creativity as a  subject so as to tickle the right brain but in this practical world it was more of a fun exercise and a subject that had no weightage for our final evaluation. So the ...

Hobby..... A choice?

I am at the  "just become" grandmas  touching 50 soon. Most of the women of my generation are still moms to teenage kids and some have just married off their kids and some with tiny  grandkids. One can now not really make out which category does a lady of my age belong to. To add on I like many carry that tag Oh you don't look your age or You look like your kids sibling etc. Thanks to hair colours and age defying products that it make sone live in utopia and with euphoria. Air travel from remote towns means a lot of waiting at airports when catching connecting flights and then the question how to kill your time is always on your mind .  The loyalty lounge looses its  charm when one is following the two meal diet. Looking around the airport you see different age   groups doing their thing. Most of them Working on  their laptops. Sending mails, and pretending to be really serious in life with the moto "time is money and money is time" . ...

Shrewsbury @ kayani

These heavenly discs at poona cantonment transport me to my childhood days and memories of Pune in 1970-1980 The world has changed since then and pune too. The food the culture and the taste of consumers too. But kayani bakery still stands rocksolid at  Pune camp  selling the same  old bakery goodies   from recipes well preserved over the years. The mawa cake, plum cake, wine biscuits  are to name a few. The king of all is however the famous Shrewsbury biscuits which flow out faster than the traffic of pune. Biting into one of those buttery light flavoured biscuit is one big luxury. The effort that goes into procurement of them from the source is as much a task as it may be to bake them. (only if we had the right knowhow) When you are not a punekar or not a Pune  camp residence you have to manage your trip to kayani between their working hours. Just like the chitale bandhu kayani too believes in the afternoon siesta and take a lunch break only ...

Mom's birthday

Birthday are  always special especially for children. As kids esp. for those from a middle class Maharasrtrian families, of my generation we never knew elders had birthdays too. We thought they were always there as grown ups. Mothers birthdays were of least significance because any  celebration meant a whole lot of work for her. Those days we never had a concept of   home delivered meals  and hotel visits were rare_  reserved for rare and  specials occasions. Mothers  birthdays could never figure out in the" special occasion" list at least  not till she touched 50. My spirtis were always high after 15 August because I was getting closer to my birthday and plans to make this special day of mine even more  special was all that I had on my mind. And each plan would mean an extra bit of work for my  mom. So moms birthday just 6 days before mine would just fade  off from my mind  like an ordinary garment picked up from co...

Travel adventure of first timers

Travel adventures and experiences have been penned down from time memorial. We have stories of famous explorers like  colombus, vasco dagama, captain Cook and also travel shows of Anthony Bourdain. Each one is filled with interesting incidents and adventures as they have ventured into the unknown or tried something challenging. But here we have an ordinary flight journey from Pune to amritsar via Delhi full of thrill and adventure. Here the full credit of this adventure lies with the traveller himself, no credit is shared by the  airlines even if it was our own Air India flight. No flights delay no cancellations yet  the journey kept us and many others on tender hooks. The traveller was my dear son travelling home for his first vacation all  alone. The traveler got not only his parents worried but got a lot of people working overtime. The morning 7.00 am  Flight was  a challenge in itself for any teenager and his parents. It meant getting up at 5.00 ...
